WalkThrus at Cromer Road Primary
Cromer Road Primary is proud to be taking part in the WalkThrus professional development programme, a research-informed approach that helps thousands of teachers refine their practice. WalkThrus has grown rapidly since its launch, with over 400,000 books released worldwide and more than 5000 schools and colleges now using the materials, including around 900 international schools across 55 countries. Its three original volumes have become best‑sellers in education, and the series continues to expand with Learning WalkThrus published in March 2024 and Coaching WalkThrus in September 2025.
As WalkThrus consultants visit schools across the country, they consistently see the impact of the programme: teachers in every type of setting are improving their practice, developing a shared professional language, and strengthening the quality of classroom learning. This is one of the key reasons Cromer Road Primary has chosen to take part. The programme is built on strong evidence from cognitive science and from research into effective professional development, ensuring that the training teachers receive is both meaningful and sustainable.
WalkThrus draws on the work of leading researchers and cognitive scientists, including Dylan Wiliam, Barak Rosenshine, Dan Willingham, Graham Nuthall and Efrat Furst. Their ideas are summarised in the WalkThrus “Why?” section, helping teachers understand not only what to do but also why certain approaches lead to stronger learning.
Central to the programme is the WalkThrus Learning Model, which guides teachers in recognising and responding to key challenges that arise during learning. These include lapses in attention, the limits of working memory, the need for deep thinking, and the importance of schema building and retrieval processes. By understanding these principles, teachers can make small but powerful adjustments that help pupils learn more effectively.
For Cromer Road Primary, joining WalkThrus reflects our commitment to ongoing professional growth and to providing the very best learning experiences for our pupils. Through this programme, our staff will continue to develop a shared language for teaching, apply evidence‑based techniques in the classroom, and strengthen the quality of learning across the school.
