Cromer Road Primary School

Religious Education

Here at Cromer Road Primary through the teaching of Religious Education, our children will explore and learn about the different beliefs and practices of people in their communities and around the world. The children will learn about traditional and modern-day religions as well as how different religions are linked through places and people. Through teaching Religious Education we hope to develop happy, motivated and confident children who show consideration and understanding for others.

Through the teaching of Religious Education in our school we aim to give our pupils:

  • Knowledge about a range of religions and different views.
  • Encouragement to express ideas and give insights about different beliefs and meanings.
  • Time to investigate and respond to different questions about them as individuals and the wider community.

Religious Education is a vitally important component of children’s personal, social and spiritual development. At Cromer Road, our Religious Education curriculum contributes to children’s developing understanding of the world around them as well as a developing understanding of history, culture and global issues. It promotes understanding and tolerance through knowledge, with the idea that knowing more about how people’s lives are influenced by their religion will enable children to appreciate the similarities and differences between members of our school community, the wider community and the global community.

Our Religious Education curriculum follows the agreed Barnet syllabus which looks at six big questions:

  • What is real?
  • Where do we come from?
  • How do we know?
  • What is our situation?
  • What is our goal
  • How do we get there?

We use the Jigsaw Religious Education scheme of work to deliver the curriculum which has been mapped out to ensure its content matches the agreed Barnet syllabus. Jigsaw takes an enquiry based approach with a key question at the heart of each unit of learning. Children have the opportunity to share and discuss their own experiences while learning about those of others.

Whole school assemblies are used to mark key religious festivals throughout the year. We also invite leaders from different religions into school to deliver assemblies to the children. Throughout their time at Cromer Road, children will visit a range of religious places of worship which further enhances their understanding and knowledge of different religions.

We believe that our Religious Education curriculum enables children to develop respect, understanding and compassion for people of all religions. The British Values of respect, tolerance and individual liberty are championed throughout lessons across the school and we hope that these core values will stay with children as they become valued members of society.
