Cromer Road Primary School

Year 1

Dear Parents/Carers

Welcome to Year 1! We hope you had a relaxing Summer and are ready for the busy term ahead.

We will use the first few weeks to give the children time to transition into the new routines, getting used to more whole class teaching on the carpet and independent work at tables. We will teach phonics and guided reading daily, as well as handwriting lessons once a week.

In English, we will be introducing the following books: 'You Choose', 'Supertato' and 'The Mega Magic Hair Swap'. We will begin with simple sentence writing and consolidating the use of finger spaces, as well as using phonic knowledge to support independent writing. We will begin to use adjectives to make our sentences more exciting, and will build up to writing character descriptions and retelling familiar stories later in the half term.

In maths we will focus on counting forwards and backwards up to 10. We will learn to order numbers, comparing using more than and less than, find one more and one less. Later in the term we will move on to addition and subtraction within 10 using a variety of physical resources. We will also begin to introduce reasoning, encouraging the children to discuss how they reached their answer.

Below you will find information on what we will be covering this half term in more detail, including our projects. Please have a look at the Home Learning Grid to find this half term's homework.

This half term, our focus school value will be "Respect'

Show and Tell

In Year 1, the children will be taking part in 'Show and Tell' sessions. In both classes this will take place on Thursday afternoons. Children will be encouraged to share something of interest with the rest of the class. They will then be encouraged to ask and answer questions. Look out for the timetable.

Reading

We will use the first couple of weeks to listen to the children read 1:1 with an adult. Reading books and reading records will be set up by 14.09.

Please can you also kindly ensure your child has their reading record in their book bag every day.

Happy Learning!

Kind regards,

Mr Arnel, Mrs Dale and Mrs Haynes
