A Rights Respecting School
Cromer Road is proud to be on the journey to becoming a Unicef Rights Respecting School. Currently, we have achieved the Bronze Award which means we are ‘Rights Committed’ and are working towards the Silver Award which would make us ‘Rights Aware.’ The final stage of the journey would be to achieve the Gold Award which would male us ‘Rights Respecting.’
The award ties in well with our school values and supports schools to embed the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC or CRC) into their practice to improve well-being and help all children to realise their potential. One of the main focus points is for the whole school community to be aware of the rights that all children are born with and how to protect and respect those rights.
There are 42 individual rights to which children are entitled, and they can be grouped into the following categories:
- The right to be safe
- The right to be heard
- The right to be treated fairly
- The right to be healthy
The children learn about their rights and how to respect the rights of others through assemblies and class activities. Each class has created their own Rights Respecting Class Charter, which highlights certain rights the class wants to focus on. The Charter identifies the role of the Rights Holders (the children) and the Duty Bearers (the adults) in protecting the rights that have been chosen.
By taking part in the Rights Respecting Schools Award Cromer Road pupils will have a better understanding of their own rights, respect for the rights of others, and respect for the world in which they live.
