Art and Design

Free paint brush pallet splash illustrationArt and Design affects every aspect of our lives and is a fundamental means of personal expression. As artists our children experience a variety of ways to express thoughts, feelings and emotions through visual, tactile and sensory experiences. We encourage creative thinking, artistic expression, effective communication and cultural awareness.

There is great pleasure to be derived from Art and Design. Through developing a deeper understanding our children are able to gain access to cultural richness and diversity learning to value and appreciate the creativity of others. A diverse range of artists are used as stimulus across the art and design curriculum. Using artists from a range of cultures helps with children’s level of engagement and helps them to see themselves represented in the world around them. An emphasis is placed on the use of first-hand experience, experimentation and development of ideas and skills based on a wide range of stimuli.

Our Art and Design curriculum provides opportunities for children to develop their creative skills in:

  • drawing
  • painting
  • sculpture
  • collage
  • textiles
  • printing

Lessons enable children to communicate what they see, feel and think through the use of colour, texture, line, form, pattern and a range of materials and processes. Children have the opportunity to:

  • produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences
  • evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design
  • learn about a diverse range of artists, craft makers and designers

For each Art and Design project we identify skills based objectives with a clear final outcome. Children are able to practise and refine skills before applying them to their final art and design piece. The children have a sketch book that follows them through the school to demonstrate progression. Art is displayed across the school to motivate and inspire others and to celebrate the pupils’ artwork from all year groups.

This is meaningful and continuous throughout the process, with evidence of age-related verbal and written reflection.
